Why Organic and Sustainable?
Eating well is about sharing seasonal, local, organic food that nourishes our bodies. We believe that producing organic food following the natural rhythm of the year is not only better for the future of our planet, but also for our well-being.
Organic Farming for the Future of our World
The principle behind organic and natural farming is that we should learn from nature and farm in sympathy with it, rather than oppressing and dominating it. Organic management:
Protects natural resources such as fresh water and healthy soils
Promotes wildlife; organic farms have up to 50% more wildlife
Prevents pollution from artificial chemicals
Uses less energy for each kg of food produced
Captures CO2 emissions in soil through ‘carbon sequestration’
Agroforestry & Afforestation
Trees are an important part of our plans to sequester carbon, protect our soil and pioneer perennial agriculture.
At Gedene, we are looking for ways to increase biodiversity and create wildlife corridor links through reforestation in our agricultural areas and in assessable areas around us. We are also preparing the ground for an agroforestry (i.e. forestry plus agriculture) trial area. Planting native fruit and nut trees among our field crops will provide a sustainable food source for people and animals.
Many crop plants are annuals and only survive for one season – this means that the soil has to be reworked and planted with seeds for each harvest. Trees can be harvested every year and leave the soil intact. Agroforestry will allow us to preserve our soil while continuing to grow a nutritious crop.
Innovative Packaging
Using some packaging is a conscious disservice to nature. We can protect our nature and our food by using recyclable packaging and product packaging. We can’t do without it completely, but we do rigorous research to find the most sustainable solutions. By choosing the most recyclable packaging and packaging options possible, we strive to do our part and instill this awareness in our environment.
We want to collaborate with ecologically-minded customers and increase conscious consumption by offering them special discounts to encourage the reuse of our packaging.
Fight against food waste
Research shows that reducing food waste would be the third most effective solution to tackle climate change. So where do we start to tackle the problem? At the beginning of the supply chain: on the farm. The United Nations (UN) 2021 Food Waste Index Report shows that more than 7.7 million tons of food is wasted in Turkey every year. According to the report, 93 kilograms of food goes to waste per person in Turkey every year.
Selling directly to customers means we can meticulously plan the quantity of our products and the contents of our boxes a year or more in advance. Each year we only increase our capacity by as much as we need.
Few retailers agree, but we think it’s better to run out occasionally than to routinely overproduce.
Growing with Green Power
Within a decade, with advances in battery technology, we expect to be able to generate most of our own energy consumption from wind turbines and solar panels. We realize this will be a challenge. But we need nature’s cooperation if we want to protect nature and grow with it. When we succeed, we will not only be a role model for other farmers, but we will also reduce pollution that hundreds of thousands of trees can only eliminate.
